i actually quit playing football to focus on basketball because football got to routine. then i quit b-ball to play soccer because that got to routine. then a teacher told me that if i applied myself i could go to college and that intelligent black men were a "dying breed"

i think i picked up an obligation at that point not to be a basketball playing negro that everyone could marginalize and instead be a book reading negro that everyone could marginalize.

i was on the bus coming home when i first started law school, reading the new york times, and some random white dude asked me if i was on the basketball team. when i said, no and that i was in law school he said:

"what? why? you don't wanna be a basketball player???"

he sounded genuinely surprised.

he was surprised that someone so obviously intelligent would make such a jarring mistake.

white people assume very tall black people are basketball players.

i live in a boston suburb and i saw a mid 40-50 year old 6'8 nicely dressed skinny black guy in the liquor store and i kept trying to place him on an old celtics team but couldn't do it.

to be fair if i see a 6'8 white person i assume they are a basketball player too. if you're over 6'5 it's surprising if you don't play basketball regardless of color.

I was very into basketball in my teens but then in my 20's I started playing pickup with a friend downtown with and realized 6'3 really isn't that tall. They nick named me the the bleeder though cuz I'd do anything involving asphalt for a loose ball.
